Margaret Batjer Director of Chamber Music
Immerse yourself in the velvet sounds of the string orchestra in this program, curated by LACO Concertmaster and Director of Chamber Music Margaret Batjer. Spanning more than 800 years, the works include 12th-century German abbess Hildegard von Bingen’s O virtus Sapientiae; Benjamin Britten’s melodious Simple Symphony, with its sophisticated orchestrations of tunes he had written as a child; the compact but lively 10th String Symphony in B minor written by a teenaged Felix Mendelssohn; Paul Hindemith’s compelling Five Pieces for String Orchestra; and Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite, which sits at the intersection of Baroque-style dances and Nordic treatments and harmonies.
Masterworks for String Orchestra at Rothenberg Hall is made possible by a generous contribution from June + Simon Li.
Masterworks for String Orchestra is made possible by a generous gift from Jim Mulally. Additional support for these Masterworks for String Orchestra concerts comes from Allan + Muriel Kotin and Anne + Jeffrey Grausam.
